    The Kelp Gull was present on the pier behind the Sea Breeze = Crabhouse and Restaurant in Sandgates (St. Mary's County), MD, on = Sunday, July 7, 2002, at 11:20 a.m. until we left at 11:40 a.m. The pale = yellow legs and very black mantle clearly separated it from the nearby = Great Black-backed, Ring-billed, and Laughing Gulls, but the feathers on = the KEGU are very worn. The tertial crescent is nearly completely gone, = and the primaries show very little white; the mirror on P 10 was only = faintly discernible. Tyler Bell and I did not see it fly today; it was = preening the whole time we were there.
    I have not personally seen the KEGU since March, 2002, despite = several brief attempts each month; I have only one report (date =
unspecified) of Kyle Rambo seeing it in April. This is the first time in = those months that gulls of any kind were present--presumably they're all = back from their breeding grounds in places other than St. Mary's County.
    Directions to the Sea Breeze follow:
Take MD Route 5 South from the Washington Beltway. About 20 miles south = of Waldorf, Route 5 becomes Route 235. Continue south on 235 about 4.5 = miles, then turn left (east) on MD Route 472 (Sandgates Road). The Sea = Breeze is about 2.5 miles along on your left, one of two crabhouses on = the Patuxent River.
