MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi Folks! On Tuesday, July 16, Matt Hafner and I did some birding in southern Maryland. The highlight of the day was discovering 34 nets of Double-crested Cormorants on the electric tranmission line towers over the Patuxent River between Chalk Point Generating Station in extreme southeast Prince George's County and God's Grace Point, Calvert County. Cormorants were not documented as nesting in Maryland during the first Atlas. In 1990 cormorants were found nesting on Poplar I. in Talbot. Today there is a thriving colony [100's of nests] on Jefferson I., Talbot ,another on Bodkin I., Queen Anne's [dozens of nests], and others associated with Brown Pelican colonies in Dorchester and Somerset counties. Except for a single nest found a few years back near Great Falls, Montgomery, there are no prior nesting records for the Western Shore. Other locations that should be checked are the large channel markers in the Potomac River near the Charles/St.Mary's county line and off of Morgantown, Charles County. If anyone happens to be boating in that area, try to take a close look. Good Birding!
