Subject: A few birds of note - swan in DC, waxwing MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Here are a few sightings of note over the past few days: 7/20 - CEDAR WAXWING at Homestead Gardens (huge nursery) in Davdisonville, MD. This is still within safe dates. Don't know who's block that is, but thought it might be of interest. There was quite a bit of evidence of breeding activity on the Gardens grounds, including an American Robin nest with 3 nestlings in it in one of the small, fancy Japanese Maples, another nest (this one empty) in another maple, and a territorial Song Sparrow amongst the potted shrubs. Just no sign of the waxwing nesting. 7/21 - TUNDRA SWAN - south end of Teddy Roosevelt Island. Presumably this is the same bird I saw on 5/26 just up river. In fact, there were many boats around the 3-sisters islands, where I saw the bird the first time, so perhaps it has been hanging around up there and just got pushed out today. By the way, I'm surprised no one took me to task back in May for saying that "wishful thinking" led me to first call this bird a Mute Swan. For the record, I have no desire to see Mute Swans expand up the Potomac, and I'm all for the efforts to eradicate this species from the bay... but until then it would be a great bird for the DC list. I guess Norm does a good job keeping flames from this email list.
