Subject: Re: Doldrums MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Post-breeding dispersal is well underway, as witnessed along the Anacostia River this past Sunday (7/28) morning. At Kenilworth Park I stepped out of the car to be greeted by 10 GREAT EGRETS flying downriver in a loose flock. About 30 minutes later I had 9 flying back upstream, presumably the same birds. At the same spot a week earlier I had an adult BALD EAGLE fly right over my head. Farther down the Anacostia, along the Anacostia River Park, I saw c.20 LAUGHING GULLS. If I remember correctly, all were adults in varying stages of molt. They're just starting to gather in this area, and will be here through most of December. I also saw 1 and heard another GREATER YELLOWLEGS in the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens/Kenilworth Park area. My first for the fall (and DC year, for that matter). But other than KILLDEER (c.8), that was the only shorebird species.
