August 3, 2002. 2 Lesser Yellowlegs (also seen by Liz A. & Les Roslund; 13th property record, 9 of them have been in the fall). 3 Least Sandpipers (8th property record; as with almost all shorebirds here these were flyovers). 18 Purple Martins (2nd highest count; 6 of 10 high counts have been in late July or early August). 210 starlings (ties 8th highest, all the other highs have been in November except for 1 October date; does anyone really KNOW what starlings do, or, for that matter, care?). Ospreys were very successful at fishing today. Also seen were a Royal Tern, a Hairy Woodpecker and 2 Cedar Waxwings. Lots of fawns this year. Aug. 4. A migrant Yellow Warbler. Sibley's "the Birds of Cape May" says that the earliest migrant Yellow Warblers there have been seen on July 9. This is the 7th or so time I have seen them at Rigby in late July or very early August. A brief drive through Blackwater N.W.R. at mid-afternoon in 96 degree heat and an un air-conditioned car netted a few Least and Spotted Sandpipers and Greater Yellowlegs in the impoundments, which were the lowest I have ever seen them, and an excellent hummingbird show at the Visitor Center feeders. Best to all.-Harry Armistead, 523 E. Durham St., Philadelphia, PA 19119-1225. 215-248-4120.
