I found out at the Anchorage airport earlier this year that my Rockport waterproof shoes also have some metal in the soles. Since then I take off my shoes, put them on the conveyor belt, and breeze through the sensor portal. But alas, on my last, extended-weekend trip I opted to use a carry-on bag. I had taken precaution to leave my beard scissors at home, but in their place took my snub nose scissors. They don't confiscate snub nose scissors, but the shape of scissors almost assures that they will rummage through your bag. In the process of doing so, the security personnel came upon the two small plastic bottles I used for small quantities of shampoo and hair conditioner. They took the bottles somewhere for additional inspection and then returned them and repacked my bag. When I got to the motel that evening, I found my toiletries immersed in shampoo. They obviously had not tightened the cap. What surprises me is that they never seem concerned about my binoculars and scope which I always carry on board.
