Almost feels like Fall, cooler weather, photo-periods are getting shorter and I sometimes get the urge to migrate to the mountain top......... for raptors. Some of the young raptors are likely getting the same urges, but not yet strong enough to leave the nest territory and the potential offerings of food from their parents. But now is a good time to start planning for Fall migration and to think about taking a part in it. Lamb's Knoll owl banding will begin in early October for its seventh season. Peak of migration falls in late October and early November. This site has banded over 700 saw-whet owls since it opened in the Fall of 1996. Its time to book your dates for field trips to the site. The past few years have had good results for the Montgomery Chapter of MOS. I hope the luck continues. If you would like to take a more active part in migration monitoring research, this provides a rare opportunity to observe it up close. Potential banders may also have the opportunity to receive some training in mist-netting techniqes and banding skills. Volunteers are always welcome; I still have not recovered from my lack of sleep in the 1995 invasion and could use a break a few nights a week. Please feel free to pass this information on to anyone that you think may have an interest. Contact me for further information or to plan field-trips or volunteer time. Gemma - better get your dates in quick!
