If two dead birds have = tested positive for West Nile Virus from a zip code they will not pick = up any more from that zip code. Since the analysis is a very = labor-intensive process the health Department wants to limit the number = of birds to be tested. The following is a list of zip codes where they = are no longer picking up dead birds: Anne Arundel - 21061, 21122, 21403 Baltimore City - 21215 Baltimore County - 21228 Carroll - 21784 Frederick - 21702 Harford - 21014, 21087 Howard - 21045 Montgomery - 20814, 20815, 20816, 20817, 20850, 20852, 20854, 20895, = 20902, 20904, 20906, 20910, 20912 Prince George's - 20706, 20710, 20735, 20740, 20743, 20744, 20745, = 20747, 20748, 20772, 20781, 20782, 20784, 20785 This year saw the first birds that were not corvids or raptors test = positive. Grackle, House Sparrow, Cardinal, Bluebird, House Finch, and = Robin have all had at least one positive though Crow and Blue Jay still = have the vast majority of the 172 positives as of August 20. In = addition 17 mosquito pools have also tested positive (15 Culex,sp. and 2 = Aedes,sp.) These are all in the Baltimore-Washington corridor. = Recently another first was the first positive dead bird from the Eastern = Shore, a crow from Kent County. Spraying pesticides for mosquitos is up to the local governments. There = has been some recently in eastern Baltimore County. The head of the = Baltimore City Health Department has resisted most spraying in the city. = He was contacted last year by the local MOS chapter and is sympathetic = to restraint of spraying. I will keep you informed if I hear anything more of interest.
