Notes, photos, videos, etc. are welcome. When documenting and submitting American White Pelican sightings, it is important to separate them from the similar (European) Eastern White Pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) and possibly even white-colored escaped pelicans such as Dalmatian (Pelecanus crispus), Pink-backed Pelican (Pelecanus refescens), Spot-billed Pelican (Pelecanus philippensis), and Australian Pelican (Pelecanus conspicillatus). Key field marks to note on American White Pelican include the color of the bare parts (the bill and around the eye) and the pattern of black on the trailing edge of the underwings (secondaries), and the presence of a fibrous plate ("knob") on the upper mandible of a breeding bird. In a general sense, reports should also describe why the bird reported is not a similarly plumaged species, such as Wood Stork, Northern Gannet or several species of boobies. If you follow the URL in my signature block to the MD/DCRC web pages, you will find a copy of the MD/DCRC Review List which indicates which species are "reviewable" and also a document checklist of general items to note and report for reviewable species. Would those of you that have seen American White Pelicans this season, please let me know if you will sending reports (reply off-list, please). Thanks.
