August 24, 2002, overcast becoming fair, NE 5 - SW 10, misty becoming hazy with distant fog, 77-95, very humid, 6:15 A.M. - 8:15 P.M. 57 species. 85 Canada Geese, 1 Wild Turkey, 1 Least Tern (year bird), 1 Yellow-billed Cuckoo, 6 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers (migrants), 185 robins (12th highest property count), a Yellow, a Magnolia & a Black-and-white Warbler plus 3 redstarts (2 of them ad. males), 2 Blue Grosbeaks, 2 Baltimore Orioles. Also a Cloudless Sulphur (first of the year although it's been 2 weeks since I have been here), 6 Gray Squirrels, 5 Diamondback Terrapin. The 3 young Carolina Wrens in the nest in my boat have apparently fledged. Brief trip to Blackwater N.W.R., 3:15 - 4:45 P.M., to check some references. 24 Eastern Kingbirds (a nice cluster of migrants), 425 Barn, 55 Bank & 50 Tree Swallows plus 1 Purple Martin (no luck with roughies or cliffs), 275 cowbirds. Most of the swallows were on the wires and over the adjacent mowed fields at the T-junction of Egypt Rd. X Key Wallace Dr. 4 Cloudless Sulphurs. Aug. 25, 2002. 57 species, again. 6:45 A.M - 5 P.M, fair, NW 10-15, much lower humidity today, 75-90. 4 Bald Eagles, 3 Royal Terns, 1 screech owl (responded to my call at 10 A.M.), 7 warblers including 1 Blue-winged, 1 Worm-eating & 1 ad. male Canada Warbler (WHAT a beauty!), 1 Yellow-breasted Chat. Also: 5 fawns, 4 does & a buck. There has been no rain here for weeks now. Some trees, especially young oaks, are dying.
