On September 28, the National Environmental Education and Training Foundation is hosting National Public Lands Day. It is a day where thousands of people all over America are involved in improving federal and state public lands. There are many ways to help, but what is needed most is volunteer time and labor. Your help may be as simple as painting a fence, pulling weeds or picking up garbage. There are a number of events in Maryland and DC. You can visit their web site at www.neetf.org or for specific projects http://www.npld.com/map2002.htm and click on Maryland or DC. They will be holding a clean up and facilities projects at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens on Saturday, September 28 and need volunteers. There are also event sites in Greenbelt, Baltimore, Ft. Frederick state park, Catoctin Mountains, Kingman Island, and Anacostia Park. I have been a volunteer for National Public Lands Day in four different states since 1997 and I assisted the federal agencies with their outreach efforts for the events. I think it is a wonderful way to get involved and get back. If you are interested, you might also consider offering your expert bird guide services to the event coordinator as well. There are usually a number of children involved that have yet to discover the wonderful world of birding. I hope to see you out there next month.
