Seriously, I have observed "my" Cardinals deteriorate over three broods this year, but not as badly as last. Maybe all the nice caterpillers and stuff I've been feeding them has helped. Last year both male and female were quite bald and their plumage was quite patchy. This year they are definitely worse for wear but still have some sort of head feathers et al. Anyway my guess is the Cardinals are just showing the strain of parenthood. Only one bald BJ this year - I think two last year (I'm really trying to: 1. take notes, 2. take legible notes 3. take legible notes that make sense, with only partial success). Not sure if this is a parent thing too or something else, since the rest of the jay's plumage seems reasonably good. I was thinking also they might have taken Turkey Vultures as role models - "punk" TV's as it were. fdp -------------------------------------------------------------------- Fred Pierce (DNRC)- fpierce@avialantic.com Mid-Atlantic Aviation on the Web - http://www.avialantic.com Planes, Trains, & Automobiles Transportation Show Sept. 21-22 2002 - www.maam.org ** *** World Airshow News - www.worldairshownews.com ** --------------------------------------------------------------------- > -----Original Message----- > From: Maryland Birds & Birding [mailto:MDOSPREY@HOME.EASE.LSOFT.COM]On > Behalf Of Janet Millenson > Sent: Tuesday, September 03, 2002 1:38 PM > To: MDOSPREY@HOME.EASE.LSOFT.COM > Subject: [MDOSPREY] Bald birds > > > The other day there was a cardinal in my yard whose head was > bare, and just > now I saw a Blue Jay with the same 'do!
