As some of you know I moved into a brand new senior community with 60 detached homes in north Laurel last Sept. Put up bluebird box and almost immediately had bluebirds (2 broods fledged) in front of house. About 3 weeks ago I put up my hummer feeder (it had still been packed!) and got hummers right away (didn't see them until about a week after I put up feeder but nectar level was going down quickly. Still have at least one immature/female Ruby-throated (probably more based on nectar level) so am very pleased. Not bad for a new development but I do have a lot of older trees in backyard. Also put in bunches of shrubs and the crepe myrtles and 2 hibiscus are blooming. Also put hummer feeder next to a red begonia handing basket. Had a very disappointing first winter at the feeders but am overrun with House Finches plus good numbers of chickadees, titmice, doves, a song sparrow, chipping sparrows, downy and red-bellied woodpeckers, cardinals, nuthatches, etc. Cheers, Kathy Rick Sussman cc: Sent by: Maryland Subject: Re: [MDOSPREY] Yard Birds (Waldorf) and new Email Birds & Birding Address 09/01/02 11:46 AM Please respond to Maryland Birds & Birding In a message dated 9/1/2002 9:02:51 AM Eastern Daylight Time, gmjett@COMCAST.NET writes: > The hords of hummingbirds seem to be have dwindled. The hummers in my yard are still present (at least 3), and very active in todays rains. They are alternately feeding and chasing each other all over the yard, burning up their energy almost as fast as they replenish it. Lots of fun to watch, especially knowing they will be leaving here very shortly for parts south...
