I have often seen goldfinches doing this at Huntley Meadows in Fairfax Co =
VA too. They were perching on mud and logs among the duckweed; I agree =
that they seem to be eating the duckweed. =20

Yesterday when I was at Hughes Hollow I watched a small group of
goldfinhes feeding in a way I don't remember seeing before. They were in =
a
dead bush over a duckweed covered stream by the impoundments. They were
extending their bodies downward and picking something(possibly the =
duckweed)
off the floating vegetation. I have seen Swamp Sparrows feeding this way,
but I don't remember goldfinches doing it.
