In our conversation, we noted that we would be going to Washington DC, September 21-25. While Mary is busy chairing the AARP National Legislative Committee meeting, I was planning to break out of the sightseeing mode in DC and do some birding. To that end, I plan on renting a car and then go to where hopefully some birds might be. Ms Smith mentioned you as a birding friend and suggested that I contact you for any helpful hints/info that you might share on birding spots. I realize this note is extrememy tardy for this type of request. She provided me with your email address. Perhaps she alerted you to be on the watch for an email from Texas looking for birding info. I have no idea when the hawk migration is in that part of the world. Generally, it peaks along the Texas coast toward the end of September. So my guess is that hawk movement is down to stragglers in your part of the world by this time. Maybe not? The same maybe true for all the other migrants. Nevertheless, there are probably some good areas to visit. I have never been to Cape May and for that matter have done zero birding around Washington. A couple of years ago, Mary and I made a quick trip to Point Lookout, Maryland; Chincoteague, Virginia and Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. It was a quick trip, with not much time to fully work the area's possibilities.
