While weeding in the bayscape garden at the National Wildlife Visitor Center on the Patuxent Research Refuge during the midday on Thursday, a co-worker pointed out a bird foraging in a shrub. Grabbing my nearby binoculars, I tried to follow the bird as it flitted around, low down in the bushes. The first thing that grabbed my attention was the solid yellow color on the entire underside, especially the bright yellow rump. I had only one brief glimpse of the entire bird before it flew out the back of the shrub. The upperside of the bird was fairly uniform greenish-brown and it had a very faint eyering. After checking Sibley's and my Natl Geo field guide, I decided it was a young male MOURNING WARBLER (only the second MOWA I've seen on the refuge in the 10 years I've been volunteering; the other was an adult, about 5 years ago). It always seems that I find my best birds while I'm engaged in some other activity! A good reason to always have binoculars close at hand. Maybe the front coming through tonight/tomorrow will bring the next wave. Bird Away.......
