It's nice to learn of an exception to the general slowness of migration in the Baltimore area this fall. Unfortunately I missed this one. There were 18 (!) species of warblers: Nashville Warbler, Northern Parula, Yellow Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Magnolia Warbler, Cape May Warbler*, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler, Bay-breasted Warbler, Blackpoll Warbler, Black & White Warbler, American Redstart, Northern Waterthrush, Louisiana Waterthrush, Common Yellowthroat, Hooded Warbler, and Canada Warbler. In addition Philadelphia Warbler was tallied. (These reports don't give numbers.) * The Cape May Warbler, "a male in breeding plumage- not high breeding plumage but still breeding plumage" was seen by Debbie Terry and Mary Chetelat after most of the 19 participants had gone. The trip was lead by Ruth Culbertson who gives credit to Debbie for many of the warbler ID's. I have been summarizing these reports for a number of years for our "Chip Notes" newsletter. This was probably the best fall warbler day at Lake Roland in many years, and was better than most spring days too. These walks continue every Tuesday at Lake Roland at 8 AM through Oct 15. See http://www.baltimorebirdclub.org/schedule.html for details.
