Not that it's not a nice place, let's just say my heart is elsewhere. Nonetheless, yesterday Saturday, September 21st, was the scheduled Carroll County fall bird count and as we were at the very least going to attend the tally as a social event, I felt obligated to raise the bins. I had done Piney Run (my winter count territory that rarely disappoints at that season) once or twice for the fall count before and never had many migrants. A little strategy session with Ringler suggest that maybe the McKeldin area of Patapsco SP might be better for migrant warblers. So that was my game plan, with a pm visit to Morgan Run NEA to round out the list with field birds. I have to say I was quite surprised, for a couple of seemingly routine locations on the Maryland piedmont. With the help of my trusty Otus tape, it was nothing short of spectacular display of migrant warblers - totaling 129 individuals of 14 species, with totals of 1 Golden-winged, 7 Tennessees, 1 Nashville, 13 Parulas, 12 Chestnut-sides, 26 Magnolias, 8 Black-throated Blues, 9 Black-throated Greens, 4 Blackburnians, 3 Bay-breasts, 14 Black-and-whites, 8 Redstarts, 22 Yellowthroats and 1 Hooded. The warbler highlight was an always beautiful adult male Golden-winged at McKeldin. Plus 41 vireos of 4 species. Here the amazing thing was the 5 Philadelphia Vireos! I hate to admit it, but I've never seen 5 Philly Vireos in one day - even in Worcester (where I've seen 33 since 1990). The number of some of the resident land were also impressive - 52 White-breasted Nuthatches! Can't get that on the coast. Details below.
