Took an abbreviated fall count this am so I could leave before the
dove hunters came this afternoon. Made my basic loop of the area, checking
the impoundments, east along Hunting Quarter Rd to the next parking lot,
through the fields to the towpath, west to Horsepen Branch Hiker Biker and
then back to the impoundments through the fields. Also checked the wires
along River Rd. and looked out over the Potomac at Sycamore Landing.
Somewhat surprisingly it was fairly active. Ended up with 46
species. Surveying my list, if I had done my full survey I would have ended
up with my usual 55-60 species. Highlights were 7 Double-crested
Cormorants, 8 Great Egrets, a MERLIN, 2 Red-headed Woodpeckers, an
OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, and 5 White-eyed Vireos. Warblers were scarce saw
single tennessee, chestnut-sided, magnolia, black-throated blue and 4 Common
Yellowthroats. Not surprising since we really haven't had any strong cold
fronts.
Didn't see any swallows on the wires on the way in, but there were 33
rough-wings when I left at noon.
