Earlier, Brad Lanning had called looking for directions, which I gave him. About 5:45 when I went out, the bird flew immediately out of cover and perched momentarily in a small cherry tree, then flew up into the top of a large walnut tree, where I lost sight of it in the windy leaves. I thought I saw it fly off heading SE, but wasn't sure. My next small bird that flew out was a Black-throated Green Warbler, which flew off towards the nursery. I never relocated the Orange-crowned. About 7 PM I got a call from Brad who had come out about 6 PM (we just missed each other) and had seen the bird. He watched it until it flew off (to roost presumably) into some pond-side willows, about 6:20 and nearly dark. He said he got really good looks, and the bird was very active and calling vociforously (as it was when I saw it). This morning (Monday, Sept 23) when I went out to walk the dog, at exactly 7 AM, the bird flew from the willows to the large mulberry tree where I had first seen it yesterday morning. It again was very actively calling ( a loud persistent CHIP), in flight as well as in the trees as it foraged. It flew to a small crab apple tree in the corner of the property, and was still there (or nearby) when I left at 7:15 this morning. So, if anyone wants to look, call me on the cell (301-221-6868) and I can give you more specific directions. I am sure the bird will be there this morning.
