Coincidentally, a good cold front had just come through bringing in many migrants, including the first Ruby-crowned Kinglets (3) and Myrtle Warbler (1) of the season. I ended up with 59 species before I had to leave for my swift and nighthawk watches this evening. Warblers were varied albeit in small numbers- 1 nashville, 5 magnolias, 1 cape may, 4 black-throated blues, 7 black-throated greens, 1 western palm, 2 bay-breasted, 3 restarts, 1 Ovenbird,.1 Northern Waterthrush and the usual Common Yellowthroats(6). Species highlights for me were 9 Great Egrets, 2 Blue-winged Teal, 2 No. Pintails, 5 Red-headed Woodpeckers, and a singing Blue-headed Vireo. Numeric highlights were 11 Eastern Phoebes, 29 Indigo Buntings, 151 Common Grackles, and 138 American Goldfinches. Although the area is still very dry there has been enough rain upstream so the mats of stargrass on the Potomac have been greatly reduced in size.
