Canada Geese have suddenly become much more prevalent over the last four days as well. Nancy saw a kettle of 200 Broad-winged Hawks over our yard at 5:10 PM on Saturday. Interstingly enough the birds departed on a northwest heading, guess the Bay is too wide for them down here. Yesterday we covered several locations here in Kent County. Here at Chesapeake Landing we had 6 warbler species including our first Myrtle (Yellow-rumped), three Ruby-crowned Kinglets, 5 Bald Eagles, and 8 more Broad-wings. Great Oak Landing Rd Pond had wall-to-wall Canada Geese with a lone Blue morph Snow Goose, but also still had pintail, Ring-necked Ducks, Ruddy Ducks, and Green-winged Teal. Shorebirds among the behemoths included 3 dowitcher (sp), 4 Stilt Sandpipers, 9 Pectoral Sandpipers and a juvenile Black-bellied Plover. Eastern Neck NWR was swarming with skeeters and not a few birds. Highlights there were a Northern Harrier, 6 Bald Eagles, two Great Horned Owls including a plaintive sounding juvenile, 82 Forster's Terns, 13 Royal Terns, 2 Caspian Terns, seven warbler species including a Tennessee (with a few blurry streaks, beware single field mark IDs of Orange-crowned), Wilson's, both subspecies of Palm Warbler, and 23 more Myrtles, and (finally) 5 White-throated Sparrows. This morning at Chesapeake Landing I had 8 Sharp-shinned Hawks, a Cooper's Hawk, 2 hummers, five warbler species including a female Black-throated Blue, and the arrival of Swamp Sparrow, Song Sparrow (they don't nest in the immediate area), and Winter Wren. The seasons are inexorably changing.
