Did anyone catch Ken Burn's Civil War series on PBS
this weekend? Aside from being an absolutely incredible
documentary, I was struck by the background sounds
that were featured as the still photos and paintings were
displayed. Being too caught up in the story of the actual
war itself, I didn't want to be distracted by trying to
identify some of the less-obvious birdsong, of which there
were many.

Since much of the featured historical material was from
the MD-VA-PA region, does anyone know about the
selection of nature sounds that Burns used for the
documentary -- that is, had there been some discussion
about it before? It was a stroke of genius, I thought, because
it gave the photos a deep sense of "being there."
