I also met Tom Dunn and birded with him awhile.I also checked the wires along River Rd. and looked out over the Potomac.which is very high after the recent rain. Ended up with 42 species. Little mixture of migration, spring and fall. Eastern Bluebirds were scouting nest sites for next spring and the Eastern Phoebes(6) were chasing each other and singing a little. Myrtle Warbler(11) are starting to increase. I recorded 2 Red-headed Woodpeckers, but they were relatively inactive. Small collection of migrants- one Northern Pintail, a probable Least Flycatcher, 1 Magnolia Warbler, 3 Black-throated Green Warblers, 5 Common Yellowthroats, a Yellow-breasted Chat, 1 Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and 3 Indigo Buntings. Had my problematic fall sighting of a bobwhite covey(10), which my golden retriever, Max, flushed. Although they were acting like wild birds I suspect one of the dog training groups had released them recently. There were at least 100 American Goldfinch along Sycamore Landing Rd. attracted by the sunflowers planted in the dove hunting area to the east.
