Join us (Potomac Valley Audubon Society) and we will keep you=20 involved; enjoying and participating in nature this beautiful fall=20 season. See below for details or go to our web-site for even more exciting= =20 news in our current October Valley Views newsletter at=20 www.potomacaudubon.org. Most importantly, let Kim know you'll be at=20 Lilypons, sign up for the race, and send in your birdseed orders ASAP! Here are the details and some updates: Wednesday, October 9 Creating Backyard Habitats Join Marci Mowery, director of education for Audubon Pennsylvania and=20 author of "Native Plants in the Creation of Backyard, Schoolyard and Park=20 Habitats," for an introduction to the amazing world of creating=20 environmentally and wildlife-friendly landscapes. We will explore how to=20 change a lawn-scape into a habitat rich in diversity that requires minimal= =20 use of chemicals and water. Creating environmentally friendly landscapes is= =20 something that we can all do--from a balcony garden to acres of land--to=20 protect our natural world. Marci Mowery has a B.S. in education from the=20 Pennsylvania State University and an MS in Geo-environmental Studies from=20 Shippensburg University. Marci will be celebrating her tenth anniversary with Audubon in October.=20 She is currently working on an environmental landscaping Web site and video, at www.envirolandscaping.org. We are back at the Fish Health Laboratory of the USGS (It is the building=20 on the left coming from the light in Kearnysville.) in the conference room= =20 at 7:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served as usual, but please help us by=20 signing up to bring refreshments for upcoming meetings. Donations are=20 always accepted. ~8> Saturday, Oct. 12, 9 a.m. =96 Field Trip to Lilypons Please join us at Lilypons Water Gardens where the focus is on water=20 gardening and their mission is to be America=92s best source of water garden= =20 materials and information. Of course, where there are beautiful plants and= =20 water, there will be birds and other wonderful creatures. We'll always=20 have an eye out for some late migrating warblers, waterfowl and raptors=20 among the usual suspects! Meet at the bridge outside Lilypons Water Gardens for birding along the=20 road. The gates at Lilypons open around 9:30. IT IS IMPORTANT TO call Kim Myles at 304-876-3804 if you are= =20 planning to come. There is a small chance we may need to cancel. Directions from Charles Town, WV (approximately 30 miles): Take Route 340=20 West towards Frederick, Maryland. Follow the signs to Route 270 South for=20 Washington, D.C. Continue on Rt. 270 South to Exit 31B for Buckeystown,=20 Route 85 South. Continue straight on Rt. 85 South for approximately 5-6=20 miles to Lilypons Road on the left. Turn left onto Lilypons Rd. and=20 continue 1.5 miles to the entrance on the left. Friday October 18 - Birdseed Orders Due! Annual Birdseed Sale Is On!! Our 21st annual birdseed sale is underway now. Orders are due October=20 18. Be aware that because of the drought in the mid-west this year, the=20 price of birdseed is expected jump up considerably "as we speak!" Ours are= =20 pre-drought prices. If you didn't receive an order form, come to the=20 Wednesday program to pick one up or go to our website and download the=20 order form and mail it to us with your check:=20 http://www.potomacaudubon.org/birdseedform02.jpg We sent two students to ecology camp this summer with our profits from last= =20 years sale--one to the Audubon Camp at Hog Island, Maine and the other to=20 the Mountain Institute camp in West Virginia. It is exciting and rewarding= =20 for PVAS members to know we are able to do this and help establish a=20 potential legacy of naturalists who will appreciate our earth and take care= =20 of her. Wouldn't it be great if we could send 5 students instead of just=20 2? The more seed you buy, the more students we can send AND you'll save on= =20 higher priced seed later this year! We thank you in advance for your=20 generosity. Saturday, October 26 This Race is For the Birds The Second Annual "This Race is for the Birds" coincides with the NCTC Open= =20 House this year! The race includes a 5K cross-country run and walk, and a=20 shorter "Fun Run" for kids. Registration forms are found on-line at=20 potomacaudubon.org. Please sign up to run, volunteer to help, or just help= =20 us spread the word about this great fun event! Refreshments and snacks=20 will be provided for the runners. This race is a major fundraising event=20 for the Yankauer Nature Preserve. Even with the wonderful response we had= =20 for the Day of Caring, there is much that needs to be done. For more=20 information or to sign up to help, contact race director Jane Lewis at=20 304-263-8624.
