There was a single Lincoln's Sparrow at the small pond on the Belmont property on Saturday morning, October 12, at about 10:00 a.m. I see from postings on MD Osprey that this species has been on the move of late. This is my first record at Belmont, where I have birded at irregular intervals since the early 1980's. (Only my second record for Howard County.) 15 Black Vultures were perched on the trees near the Belmont tennis court while the weather was overcast and misty. Only other notable sightings at Belmont were the large number of Eastern Bluebirds - I estimated at least 30 close to the mansion house - and Chipping Sparrows; I estimated about 50, including many juvenile birds. Both species breed there. Mike Bowen Bethesda D.H.
