Last evening, we birded the ORV zone of Assateague to do some seawatching. There were Gannets and Black Scoter on the move, but we only found 1 Parasitic Jaeger really far out. The real highlight though was 50!! Red Knots on the beach. That is an exact number by the way, not an estimate. Today we set up our Big Sit at Bayside Campground at 6am in light drizzle. I'll give more details on the Big Sit tomorrow in a longer email. As was posted previously, we had a Eurasian Collared-Dove give 3 passes on the point before heading off to South Point. Norm and Fran Saunders were around to enjoy this bird with us. After the second pass, Jim found the bird back toward the campground sitting in a dead tree and was able to get 1/2 second of video before the bird made its final pass. Other highlights were 2 Peregrines and a total of 4 Great Cormorants (all flybys). On the way home from the Big Sit, we stopped by Hurlock and refound the adult Black-headed Gull as well as an immature Bonaparte's Gull (same one from August??). A Ross's Goose provided great views on the dike as it remained with a flock of 12 Snows when all of the other geese took off into the impoundment. We searched unsuccessfully for the Red-necked Phalarope at Pickering Creek. More on the Big Sit tomorrow.
