Since the hawk flight was slow, I got distracted. In the northwest corner of the meadow at Willow Grove Farm (just north of the hawkwatch spot) was an excellent concentration of sparrows. Some were in the "pumpkin patch" (high grass with a few pumpkins strewn around) and others were in the shrubs bordering the meadow. Also, a steady stream of birds was moving east to west along the meadow border. I stayed in one place for an hour and watched the show. Esatimated sparrow numbers were: Song 90, Chipping 40, White-throated 3, Savannah 1, WHITE-CROWNED 1. A small, bright, tail-cocking bird accompanied the sparrows-- SEDGE WREN. Last fall a Sedge Wren visited Cromwell for 3-4 days. Perhaps this one will stick around as well.
