She's also heard from wildlife rehabilitators that many raptors who have survived West Nile nevertheless have developed permanent neurological impairment and cannot be released into the wild again. Let's hope that next year the resistant portion of the bird population is able to fledge lots of healthy offspring. As the Joni Mitchell song said, "You don't know what you've got till it's gone."
