Total Species seen/heard: 72 Birds of note: Horned Grebe, Hudsonian Godwit, Ross's Goose Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge: Our first stop was closed due to deer hunting. However, they let us in as long as we stayed on the paved roads, and didn't get out of the car. This developed into an interesting morning of birding by automobile. Double-crested Cormorant Ruddy Duck Canada Goose Wood Duck Mallard American Black Duck Northern Pintail Lesser Scaup Bufflehead Great Blue Heron Turkey Vulture Bald Eagle Northern Harrier Sharp-shinned Hawk Cooper's Hawk Red-shouldered Hawk Red-tailed Hawk American Kestrel Virginia Rail Ring-billed Gull Great Black-backed Gull Herring Gull Laughing Gull Royal Tern Forster's Tern Mourning Dove Belted Kingfisher Red-bellied Woodpecker Yellow-bellied Sapsucker Downy Woodpecker Hairy Woodpecker Northern Flicker Eastern Phoebe Blue Jay American Crow Eastern Bluebird American Robin Northern Mockingbird Brown Thrasher European Starling Brown Creeper Marsh Wren Carolina Wren Tree Swallow Ruby-crowned Kinglet Golden-crowned Kinglet Carolina Chickadee Tufted Titmouse American Goldfinch Yellow-rumped Warbler Pine Warbler Song Sparrow Swamp Sparrow White-throated Sparrow Dark-eyed Junco Chipping Sparrow Eastern Towhee Northern Cardinal Red-winged Blackbird Rusty Blackbird Rock Hall - In and around Rock Hall (Allen Lane, the harbor, the beach), we added: Common Loon Horned Grebe Mute Swan Osprey Fish Crow Cedar Waxwing Rock Dove Chesapeake Farms: for a little more car birding, we added: Snow Goose Northern Shoveler Hudsonian Godwit - hidden among a group of mallards Our final stop was the Great Oakes Pond (aka Lake Ellison), where there were about 5,000 Snow geese and 3 Ross's Geese - one juvenile and 2 adults. All in all, it sure beat going to work!
