I looked in most of my references and could find nothing about herons/bitterns swimming, including the new Sibley behavior book, John K Terres' large encyclopedia of N.A. Birds. A request: if anyone out there has a copy of the write up for American Bittern from those pamphlet type life histories (whose name, publisher, etc. escapes me at the moment) that are nearing completion, could you look to see if there is any mention of American Bitterns (or other members of the heron family) swimming. This is fascinating to me...
