Only about 8 miles from center of Portland. You'll have to go across the drawbridge - you can get to this by travelling down State St. (one way street (I think) going in the direction of the bridge - but Portland so small will be easy to have someone point you in the right direction.) After crossing the bridge follow the road to 2nd light (I think). Turn Right at a large school or school-like building, might be Hwy 1. Stay on this through S. Portland and Cape Elizabeth and follow signs to Crescent Beach State Park. The park is large and has a large beach - find out tide in and out times - fun when tide is out. While looking at the water, to the right there is a large [mainly] coniferous and scrubby and even marshy area that has a nice path that will loop you back around to the parking lot. On the left of the beach, way over on the other side of another parking lot (Kettle's Corner), there is a boardwalk that leads you to another still scrubby and marshy but nevertheless slightly different habitat (I say this because I think there may be more decidious trees on this side. I seem to remember some knobby apple trees). You should have a pretty good time here - could easily spend the better part of a day, depending upon how methodical you are. If you continue on down Hwy 1 towards Scarborough other birding opportunities are sure to present themselves. Also, the road to Portland Headlight and the Headlight park itself should be quite good. Unfortunately, I don't know what will be around this time of year. Have a good time and post what you see upon your return.
