They joy of birding!! There seems to be some group of birds migrating every month of the year, with the exception of summer. (But now we have the Atlas to keep us entertained!!). October is undoubtedly the best and most exciting month for migrants. It does extend a bit from late September to early November. In the Piedmont- Commonly seen species are SONG, SWAMP, FIELD, CHIPPING, WHITE-THROAT, WHITE-CROWN, FOX, AMERICAN TREE, JUNCO Seen less frequently - some declining VESPER, GRASSHOPPER, LINCOLN'S Rare- CLAY-COLORED, NELSON'S SHARP TAILED, LARK, HARRIS', LE CONTES- (wishing!!!) If you can find or have access to warm season grass fields they are the best spots. Open mixed weedy fields with scrubby vegetation can also be good. Old cut corn fields can be productive too.
