Supposedly based on WW II plane spotters -- "General Impression and Size" -- a long discussion on Birdchat (might want to check BC archives on this) a few years ago seemed to conclude that it even pre-dated WW II and had a different origin, but my Brit friends still say it's from WW II. (Or maybe, WW I?)
