Today I made my usual rounds around the Perry Point VA Hospital complex. Just under three hours and 50 species tallied with at least 10 Red-tailed Hawks passing southerly. Nothing too exciting, however there did seem to be birds everywhere! Cardinal numbers were the highest I have ever seen here. Also saw Eastern Phoebe and Palm Warbler (western). those two surprised me, I figured they had split by now. Along with the Red-tails raptors noted were Bald Eagle (2) and a lone Kestrel hunting right at dusk over a field full of blackbirds. The blackbirds were mostly Common Grackle with a few Red-wings. A lot of Cedar Waxwings, Robins, and Eastern Bluebirds also. Sparrows were active with not as many White-throats as days before. Sparrows noted were: Junco, Song, White-throat, Field, House, and E. Towhee. Water fowl continued to be good in Mill Creek with 11 species noted including Pied-billed Grebe, and D.C. Cormorant. Ruddy Duck numbers have increased in the past 24 hours with well over 200 birds present. Laughing Gulls and Forster's Terns were also present. I also saw the first Hairy Woodpecker that I've seen in a long while today.
