Those efforts were rewarded with a total of 60 = species found, highlighted by quite decent views of an adult Golden = Eagle. The group was scoping scoters from the western extremity of the = Center grounds when the Golden suddenly appeared overhead. Clear and = open views were provided to all, as the bird, with its large head, = strong bill and dark body, pumped powerfully southward across Prospect = Bay. Additional highlights were provided by the sparrows: Fox (six or more) Swamp (numerous) Song (several) White-throat (numerous) Field (three or more) Towhee (one, calling) and many Juncos. Quite a few waterfowl were spotted - all three Scoters, fine numbers = of Buffleheads and Ruddys; some Lesser Scaup, one Golden Eye, several = Long-tailed Ducks, lots of Common Loons, a single DC Cormorant, one = Horned Grebe, three fly-over Tundra Swans, a family of Mute Swans and = several Black Ducks. Two Northern Harriers were working the marshes, and one entertained = us by repeatedly tangling with an American Crow. A single Greater Yellowlegs was heard but not seen, as was a single = Hermit Thrush. Karen and Bill Harris bravely led the outing. And, unlike the = previous club trip to Horsehead back in September, no mosquitos were = sighted.
