Jan has recently begun a series of census visits to Poplar Island as part of the Poplar Island Environmental Restoration Project (PIERP). PIERP is being performed under the auspices of the US Army Corp of Engineers. Right now Poplar Island is a very active construction site, and hence is not suitable for public access. Jan gets access in order to census the flora and fauna. He has graciously offered to let his bird sightings be reported via MDOSPREY, so this is the first of what will be a series of reports from Poplar Island. Through the winter he plans to visit the island on a monthly basis. In spring and summer visits will probably be more frequent. Highlights from Jan's November 15 visit are as follows: Common Loon - 12 Brown Pelican - 1 DC Cormorant - 29 Gt Blue Heron - 15 Northern Shoveler - 112 Lesser Scaup - 1069 Ruddy Duck - 1946 Black-bellied Plover - 2 Semipalmated Plover - 8 Killdeer - 26 Greater Yellowlegs - 2 Sanderling - 98 Semipalmated Sandpiper - 6 Least Sandpiper - 34 Purple Sandpiper - 53 Dunlin - 206 Laughing Gull - 1 Herring Gull - 365 Great Black-backed Gull - 398 Royal Tern - 6 American Pipit - 5 Snow Bunting - 13 Les Roslund lroslund@bluecrab.org Talbot County Easton MD ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
