My recent "bird drought" has ended. By 10 a.m. I'd seen more than 20 species, and ultimately tallied 26 for the day (plus unidentified blackbirds overhead) despite scarcely setting foot outdoors. A Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, one of five kinds of woodpeckers, was the most interesting sighting. It was so busy it looked like a photo shoot for a birdfeeding catalog. At one point five different species of birds were sharing the not-that-large sunflower feeder; at another time a group of sleek Cedar Waxwings was splashing in the shallow part of the pond. The previously absent juncos finally showed up en masse. An enterprising accipiter could have had quite a feast.
