Lookout around mid-day today. There were 5 swallows feeding around the pond & point. One was clearly a Tree Swallow & at least one was most surely a Cave Swallow. The bird had a pale throat, a light but not white forehead, dark crown & dark eyeline, the nape was pale. Another bird had a more golden throat. The one I concentrated on most looked like the juvenile on p. 369 of Sibley. Also at the Point, 3 female Red-throated Mergansers, 6 male Long-tailed Ducks, many common loons & Buffleheads. On Cornfield Harbor Road we watched 3 juvenile Red-tailed Hawks which were perching more or less together in the pines & flying down to the same spot in a field full of soy beans. Because the beans have not be harvested we could not see what the birds were doing there. This is the first time we have ever seen this sort of behavior from red-tails. They were all in the field in the same place at the same time. Between the Point & our house we saw 10 red-tails, 1 Sharp-shin, 7 Kestrels.
