Subject: Ducks in DC Comments: cc: Janni Ottavio MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit This morning (Sun, 11/24) I made a quick check along the Potomac, hoping that I might find a stray Cave Swallow in DC. No such luck, however I did find some ducks of note: LONG-TAILED DUCK - 1 male w/3 Buffleheads, opposite the FDR memorial REDHEAD - 1 male, opposite Hains Point (nr. the north end of the airport) LESSER SCAUP - 11, also seen from Hains, but at the south end of the airport Other birds: COMMON LOON - 1 opposite Hains PEREGRINE - 1 on RR bridge Also, yesterday afternoon I had a flock of c.40 TUNDRA SWANS fly over my house in, gasp, south Arlington. Clearly there was a decent movement of these birds over the weekend. As for the long-staying Tundra Swan at the south end of Teddy Roosevelt Island that Mike Bowen pointed out, this is the same bird that summered in the area, first seen around Memorial Day. I've been watching it off and on there since that time. I'm hoping it sticks around for another week so I can tick it on my December DC list. But who knows, it may hear some of its kin flying over and take off to join them.
