It flushed from some poke and began poking around in the Sweet Gum trees. Interestingly, there was a report to me that swallows were roosting in an organic farmer's barn. He thought they were Cliff Swallows. Anne Bishop and I tried to check them out, but were disappointed to find that they were quite hidden in the uppermost area of the barn. With very bad lighting and only being able to see the tail and undertail coverts we could not make any identification. Of course, we could eliminate Barn Swallow by the tail and I think all the other normally seen swallows by the dark flanks except for Cliff and Cave. Tyler Bell forwarded me a message from NJBirds that describes Cave Swallows roosting at Cape May. It sounded very familiar. There were also House Sparrows roosting in the barn that we could ID. I tried again this morning to see what left the barn. Again, all I found was House Sparrows, but I may not have been early enough. I will try to go this evening and see what roosts. They may have already migrated on. I would suggest people getting out and checking out roosting spots near water. Also, in my excitement about Cave Swallows, I forgot to mention the Harlequin Duck is still at Point Lookout as well as the gannets. I know this is probably of interest to any one traveling to Point Lookout. The duck is now frequenting the southern area of the causeway on the bay side with either Common Goldeneye or Buffleheads.
