Tanager--NO; week in review MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi Folks, JB Churchill and I looked for the WETA this morning (12/1) at Loch Raven Reservoir, unsuccessfully. We were there for about 90 minutes, and activity was high, but alas all common birds. A summary of other sightings for the past week: Wed., 27 Nov, an AMERICAN TREE SPARROW at UMBC was my first for the winter, and my first ever on campus. Thur, 28 Nov, a walk around the Mears Farm in SW Baltimore Co. with Charlie Kucera produced a beautiful (and fairly late) LINCOLN'S SPARROW sitting in the sunlight for a couple minutes, displaying its buffy lower throat and upper breast, with some barely discernable streaking. Friday, 29 Nov, I walked the Halethorpe Ponds area with Brian Sykes. On the Anne Arundel Co. side of the Patapsco River we had a nice assortment of my winter favorites: YB SAPSUCKER, BROWN CREEPER, WINTER WREN, and HERMIT THRUSH. Then on the Baltimore Co. side of the river, Brian showed me a hummingbird nest, one that we had looked for many times this summer. This made RT Hummingbird the 52nd confirmed species for the Relay NW atlas block this year. We also visited the large Halethorpe pond (SW Baltimore Co.), where waterfowl is beginning to gather. The tally: PIED-BILLED GREBE (1), GADWALL (17), AM. BLACK DUCK (5), MALLARD (dozens), N. SHOVELER (4), HOODED MERGANSER (9), and RUDDY DUCK (1). This evening (1 Dec) at UMBC, Charlie Kucera and I had a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, which has been pretty regular this fall, and an AM. BLACK DUCK, only the second one I've seen on campus since 1997.
