Dec. 10, DNR is conducting public meeting on the draft plan for Chapman's Forest (College of Southern Maryland, Ctr for Business & Industry, La Plata,7 pm doors open 6:30). This important environmental and historical tract slated for development with 4,600 homes + commercial & Potomac marina, was purchased with state Program Open Space funds in 1998, after long years of work by citizen environmentalists throughout the state/SMAS help. DNR has been working on management plan with citizens advisory groups for past several years and wants to get final plan to Glendening before Jan. 15th. The business community and most Chas. Cty politicians have been angry that the land was not developed and there is a real threat that the preservation may be reversed, at least in part, by the in-coming state administration. For the many of you who have been to Mount Aventine you know the value of this property. Help is needed to insure that it remains unfragmented to preserve its rich FID habitat and unspoiled drainage into Mattawoman Creek, and that it be used for environmental education and other wise ways. The draft plan can be viewed after Dec. 4 at www.dnr.state.md.us/forest/chapmansforest with comments until Jan. 3. NEED YOUR HELP!
