This is very interseting. -----Original Message----- From: Norm Saunders [mailto:marshhawk@ATT.NET] Sent: Sunday, December 01, 2002 3:05 PM To: MDOSPREY@HOME.EASE.LSOFT.COM Subject: Re: [MDOSPREY] Atlas Challenge: Update Christopher Starling asks: > What do you (Jim Stasz) mean by #4000 for this year's big tick? Christopher, the MOS maintains a list report for members. Each year we publish the state and county life lists and year lists of birds seen in Maryland by MOS members. Additionally there iare two other categories--All-County, and Big Tick. All-County is the number of birds seen in all twenty three of Maryland's Counties. That is, to count a starling on this list you will have needed to see it in all twenty three counties. The Big Tick is the sum of all bird species seen in each county, a subtle but significant difference from the All-County. Jim Stasz has far and away the highest All-County list (close to 200 now, Jim?) AND the highest Big Tick list (well over 5000). after a little good-natured ribbing last year, Jim said he would go for the highest ANNUAL big tick for 2002 if some of us would pledge donations to the MOS Atlas project based on the total he attains. So far he has tallied 4000 species (adding up all the birds seen in all 23 counties), a truly amazing feat.
