A layer of ice has formed around the island and along the Potomac shoreline. A far cry from birding last year when I participated in a December 6th Montgomery County field trip and mid-day temperatures were in the low 70s! Chickadees were in a abundance today, while titmice conspicuously absent. A warm meal was on the mind of a couple of the animals. A red fox sat out on a mud bar, apparently hoping one of the surrounding waterfowl would soon be on his dinner plate. A sharpie scrambled from a tree in pursuit of a not-to-concerned great blue. Twenty-five species observed on/around the island to include: Great Blue Heron Tundra Swan Canada Goose Mallard Sharp-shinned Hawk Killdeer Ring-billed Gull Herring Gull Mourning Dove Downy Woodpecker Pileated Woodpecker Fish Crow Carolina Chickadee White-breasted Nuthatch Brown Creeper Carolina Wren Winter Wren Ruby-crowned Kinglet Hermit Thrush European Starling Song Sparrow White-throated Sparrow Northern Cardinal Red-winged Blackbird American Goldfinch Tom Marko MOS-MCC tlmarko@us.med.navy.mil ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
