Much to my surprise, I saw 3 pair of wood ducks sitting off the ice in the open water. There were 6 northern shovelers in a tight circle. Eventually I got both sets in view at the same time in my camcorder. After the storm, all small ponds in the area were iced up and no waterfowl were to be seen. At schoolhouse pond only seagulls sitting on the ice. no open water., Except on the Bay... North Beach Before the storm, I saw 3 groups of 500 of lesser scaup very close to the boardwalk. I was able to see juveniles, adults, M/F and enjoy the closeness and enjoy identifying the range of ages of the 1,500 scaup. After the storm, I returned to north beach near sunset and counted 10 times as many. The horizon was lined with lesser scaup as far as the eye could see. These were close near Clancy's but flew further north and further away as the sun set. I conservatively estimate there were 3000-5000 lesser scaup. But there could have been more. Also notice a few bufflehead, grebes and 4 tundra swans both times.
