Date: Sat, 7 Dec 2002 18:20:41 -0500 Reply-To: Maryland Birds & Birding Sender: Maryland Birds & Birding From: Peter Webb Subject: Pt Lookout Harlequin performs MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Details to follow tomorrow, but: Excellant views of the Harlequin Duck today in full sunlight at the NORTH end of the Point Lookout causeway, nice views of a tight group of about 20 Horned Larks and perhaps 7 or more American Pipits flying around at the point, saw up to three at once, beautiful Fox Sparrows, Swamp Sparrow, and Brown-headed Nuthatches at Cornfield Harbor Drive just after a right turn at a marsh, excellant views of all three Scoters opposite the Picnic Area entrance (in the bay, ID possible by binoculars and nice views by 'scope), a flight of 41 Brown Pelicans all in a line flying in from out in the bay, some close adult Gannets, some not-so-close Great Cormorants, and all the common raptor species (including Harrier and Kestrel) at the end of the day on the way home. An altogether enjoyable trip, surprisingly mild considering the frigid early morning temperatures, sunny with light breeze. Poor Steve Sanford was all ready to get some super digiscope shots of the Harlie when he discovered to his horror that his camera batteries were dead and he didn't bring any backup batteries for it! We could have had some fabulous shots of the Harlie and the Scoters - oh, well..
