Comments: To: SongStar MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Hi folks, I just saw the biggest baddest acciptiter I've ever seen take a grackle in my back yard. It positively dwarfed the grackle. It was very brown and had a yellow eye, so it was a juvenile. It had a prominant light eyebrow. When I first saw it, I thought it was one of the local Red-shouldered Hawks, but it was much too large and lacked the reddish breast and warm tones in the wings. The tail was very long, banded, and white tipped. It sat on a branch with its back to me, so I didn't get a good look at its belly or undertail coverts. What streaking I saw was heavy and dark. Unfortunately, it decided to fly off and eat its meal somewhere else. Are there other field marks I can use to figure out if this was really a goshawk or an unusually large Coopers Hawk?
