I don't know how one goes about estimating 3000-5000 birds, but right off the North Beach pier were "thousands" of scaup with some bufflehead thrown in. On the beach, mixed in with mallards was a beautiful male Wood Duck, great view. Also, right behind Chaneys was a group of several hundred Canvasback.
