On Sycamore Landing Rd, lots of birds feeding on berries in the bushes at the side of the road. Not much unusual - I did turn up one imm. White-crowned Sparrow and a Winter Wren. Then on to the impoundments at Hughes Hollow. I thought it seemed very quiet when I got there and soon saw why - a Merlin was perched on a snag in the 2nd impoundment to the right, close to the path, and was finishing a meal. It was very confiding and allowed a close approach, allowing a hunter to walk right past it. It flew a short distance after it had polished off its victim but when I left was still perching prominently on the snag.
